The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This
Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
