Department of Justice Intervenes in Lawsuit to Stop the State of California's Congressional Map
Federal authorities have entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
